(Previous email address was wrong so I have reposted with correct email address.)

I was just looking around the site to see if there was anything that might be of interest to my grandfather, John S. Herron, who was a member, if I have this right, of 3/3 in WWII. I'd be happy to pass along any email from anyone who might have served with him.

My father, Ray, is now deceased. He was in the United States Navy and fought with the marines as a PHM1/C. In is latter years, he spoke proudly of his service to his country and his marine brothers. He never spoke of Iwo Jima until the last year of his life, although this battle affected him throughout his life. It made him the great man he was and shaped my life. I wanted to write this to let all of the veterans of WWII know that their service to our country lives on in their sons and daughters. We will not forget.

I was a Tank Crewman with the 1st Separate Tank Company 3rd Marine Division at Guadalcanal in 1943, and one of the Marines involved in saving a drowning Marine from a capsized boat due to our practice fire. I was then transfered November 2, 1943 to L Co.,3rd Battalion 3rd Marine Div.,FMF to participate against enemy forces in Bougainville. Any of you Marines out there remember the late night knife fight 3 Marines had with a Japanese intruder that jumped or fell into a pre dug 3 man foxholes we used after being relieved by the Army? I was one of those Marines. We boarded ship a couple days after Xmas, and was given a wonderful Xmas dinner. The fire in my heart and soul for the US Marine Corps has never dimmed. I would very much like to hear from anyone with the Tankers and L Company 3rd Battalion 3rd Division. God Bless, Leslie

Joined Dec 7 1953. Went to 1st Bn MCRD PI for boot camp. From there went to Couthhouse Bay CLNC for trng to be a heavy equip mech.. Got orders to Mcas ElToro to report MACG-6. Then I got order to Korea and was to report to VMO-1. When the ship got to Korea, they shipped me to Gifu Japan, where VMO-1 was now locatyesss We stayed there for awhile, then we moved to Opamma,Japan. After staying there for awhile, the unit got orders to move too Sukaran, Oki.. Now that was a trip.My sect.loaded up on a LSD. Got out to sea, ran onto a typhoon. a bad typhoon, the skipper was ready for us to cut the chains holding the equipment so that they could be jettisoned of push came to shove. The OE-1's and the Bell Helo came via other ships. I was asleep in my truck until they came and woke me up, telling me what was going on. My truck was on the deck, several were in the well deck. Any way we didn't have to jettison any equipment. Finally laned at Naha Oki. port and disembarked. Formed up a convoy, moved out on hiway 1 and went to our new home. I stayed until and re-enlisted and went home in 1956. Like to hear from any one who might have traveled this road with me.

Richard "Doc" DeVett is looking for Lt. Hawkins from Montana. They served together in the 3rd Marine Division in 1968. Lt. Hawkins came from Intelligence to become a platoon leader. Doc last saw the Lt. on Okinawa, where Hawkins lost his wallet to a girl in a bar. Any information on Lt. Hawkins would be deeply appreciated.
