I am interested to know if there is anyone out there who with any information about the Sea Bees from 1942 through 1945. My father was in the Navy at that time and was in the islands building runways, etc. at the beginning of the war. His name was Wilbur Watson and he was a Lt. JG. The Commander at the time was Earnest Beaterman. I have a couple issues of the news paper which was started during that time called "Bullets and Bolts". My dad didn't talk much about the war so I would like information about that time and place. Thanks.

I have asked for information from you before via your written bulletin and got great responses, but now that you are on line, I wanted to ask again. Do any of your members remember a Captain Edward V. Stephenson, USMCR, from Seaboard, NC, who fought on Bougainville and Iwo Jima? On Iwo, he was the CO of L Company, 3/21, and helped to stop an attack by about three or four Japanese tanks. He received a posthumous Silver Star for that action and another. He was killed in action on Iwo while up front with his radioman and gunnery sergeant looking for a Japanese gun, which fired and blew them to bits. He was a good friend of Captain Dan Marshall, who survived Iwo. His battalion CO was Wendell Duplantis. Captain Stephenson was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and was a phamacist before the war. I intend to write about him along with some Iwo survivors I met on the 1995 return to Iwo. Semper Fi, Charles A. Jones, 1600 East Ocean View Avenue, Unit D, Norfolk, VA 23503

Does anyone know who were the US Marine Officers in New Zealand (Wellington)that stayed at the Paekakariki Camp between June - September 1943. I am trying to find my grandfather whom I believe was one of these US Marine Officers but I am having trouble getting names as my grandmother has passed away and she refused to tell any of us his name.

My grandfather was a former Captain and was (for the last 40 years)country Doctor John Orlando Williams, Jr. from Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. He's now deceased and I miss him so much. He was awarded the Silver Star for his efforts in Korea. He was assigned to the 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, 3rd Batallion, How Company. After Korea, he was assigned to Bermuda where one of my uncles was born and then to Quantico where four of my uncles (he's got 5 sons, no daughters) learned to play poker when they were 2,3, and 4 years old, as taught to them by our young Marine babysitters. I would like to know more about him. What I know is so limited that i find I'm curious. So if you knew him , please e-mail me and I will be eternally grateful to you. There is no stronger bond that my grandfather had with anyone than with a Marine. The very best to all of you.

Operation Beaver Cage, May 1967 I was a photographer with the First MarDiv. I was with 1/3 on Beavercage. Not sure which company. On 8May67 we were ambushed by NVA situated above us on a hill. We were "on the wrong side" of the water (river?) and had to retreat to that water. The leeches were HUGE.

Anyone out there who remembers that?

On February 8th 1968, at about 4:15 AM, a reinforced platoon, (1st Platoon, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, Ninth Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division) fought a battle 500 meters outside the lines at Khe Sahn on a small knoll known as Hill 64 or Alpha Outpost. I was the surviving corpsman from that battle. On that day, 25 marines and one corpsman were killed and at least 26 other marines were wounded. The North Vietnamese Army lost about 150 confirmed killed. Despite attacking the hill with an estimated battalion the NVA did not over run the hill. There have only been a few stories written about this battle. At best these stories provide only an incomplete picture of what went on that morning and at worst distort the truth and dishonor the dead.

I hope to tell the story of the Battle for Hill 64 from the personal experiences of the surviving marines. I am alive today because of the courage and valor of those who fought and never gave up. In this regard I would like to thank some of the surviving marines who displayed courage and leadership in this fight.

Corporal James Feasel for all practical purposes was the senior NCO who consolidated the lines and with about 13 marines prevented the NVA from fully overrunning the hill.

Corporal George Chapman, who fought his way to the medical bunker to protect the wounded marines who were trapped with me behind the NVA lines.

PFC Arnold Aldrette and PFC Ford who went to the top of the hill and prevented the NVA from coming over the top and flanking the remaining marines holding the western trench line.

Captain Mac Radcliff who despite orders to do nothing, organized a relief force and lead the assault to retake the part of the hill occupied by the NVA and rescued the marines who were trapped behind enemy lines.

There are many other marines who deserve recognition for their valor and this story is dedicated to them and is intended to provide an opportunity for their story to be told. In addition, there have been a variety of accounts which do not seem to jive with what the marines on Hill 64 experienced. This project story will try to sort out fact from fiction about what happened on Hill 64.

To tell the story completely and accurately I am asking the marines who were on Hill 64 to get in touch with me so I can include their story into this account. I also want to hear from any one who was at Khe Sahn on February 8th 1968 to get their observations In the end, I would like to make this story available to the USMC historical archives so there is at least one place where the truth is told about this battle. Although the story of the battle for Hill 64 is important to the marines and corpsman who fought and died there, this is only one small battle and pales in comparison with the many major actions which make up the rich history of the United States Marine Corps. But it is a story that deserves to be told.

So far I have been able to piece together a small part of the events of the battle as told to me by a a few marines who were there. I would like to hear from everyone involved to make the picture as complete as possible. In addition, I have been gathering the after action reports, books, articles, and other documents that add to the historical record to understand what has been said of this battle. Some of these accounts are disturbing to those of us who fought on the hill. Some reports need to be corrected and at least deserve an open discussion about the rationale for decisions made by commanding staff which had a direct impact upon marines and corpsmen who occupied Hill 64. In developing the story of the battle for Hill 64, the discussion of the events are open to all parties and will be as transparent as possible. As this project develops questions raised by the marines on the hill will be presented in an effort to understand what took place that morning and the events that led up to the battle . Information I developed for this project will have no copyright limitations. Anyone interested in providing and sharing information is encouraged to do so.

The mud was deep at VCB in August 1969. I reported in at h&s, 2/4, Comm. platoon. They were playing softball in the road. We took rockets that afternoon. "Red", "Valdez", "Montoya", "Terry", "Griff" called me into the bunker. Rockets hit the _hitter. Was assigned as radio operator (2531) at the COC up on FSB Russell. Was there until we left Russel for Khe Gia and then to Dong Ha Mountain, FSB Fuller, with radio relay team and 2/4 S3 Major o'Meara. Would like to hear from anyone I served with... especially David James Beight, "DJ" from Texas. I have not forgotten you guys, and it seems the more time that passes the more I remember you. Maybe it did "mean somthin'"

On December 18, about 8:30pm, I was involved in a car accident going north on the 215. I lost control of my car, ran off the road, and flipped a few times before settling in a field several feet from the freeway. Luckily, I was not hurt. A car full of marines stopped to help. They pulled me out of my car and made sure that I was not injured. There were 5 or 6 of them, and the only name I remember is "Gary." All I know is that they were headed out to San Bernadino. I was a little disoriented that night, and I would like to find these gentlemen so that I can just properly thank them for helping me out. There are not many people willing to lend a helping hand, and I would just like them to know how much I appreciate them. If any one has any information as to how I can contact these wonderful marines, please let me know.

PROUD SON OF A 3RD MARINE!!! 'Corporal Leo P.(Davis)Dwulit'. Invaded Bougainville on Nov 1st, 1943. I am searching for all info, pictures that I can find on my father(Leo). My father(Leo) and his buddy (Lenny) used to draw a circle on the beach at Bougainville and dance the jitterbug to (Milo Muslins') accordion for the troops coming back from the fighting. If anyone has a picture of my dad(Leo)on Bougainville, or especially dancing the jitterbug, i would be eternally grateful to see it! Leo passed away on Feb 25th,1998, still speaking with great love and respect for his Marine Family! The 3rd marines are always in my prayers...David Leo(Davis)Dwulit...dwulit56@netscape.net
