PROUD SON OF 3RD MARINE--'Corporal Leo P.(Davis) Dwulit'. Invaded Bougainville on November 1, 1943. Site is excellent...I am currently searching for all info, pictures that I can find on the Bougainville Invasion, and my father. My father(Leo), and his buddy (Lenny), used to draw a circle on the beach at Bougainville, and dance the jitterbug to (Milo Muslins') accordion, for the troops coming out of the jungle. If anyone has a picture of my Dad (LEO) on Bougainville, or especially dancing the jitterbug, please let me know.

Leo told me stories about the natives being afraid to go up in the hills at night..."I E Ku get you Leo" they would say to him. Leo passed away on February 25, 1998...even at the end,he spoke of his Marine Buddies and I E Ku.

The 3rd Marines are always in my prayers, David Leo (Davis) Dwulit ottoschtuka@hotmail.com

He was there for Bougainville and was still his platoon's corpman up to when operation "Olympic" was cancelled. He is a lifetime member of the assoc. and forever a marine. Any replies to him are more than welcome to be placed through me as I see him often.

The information listed above is regarding my grandfather who passed away before I was born. I am trying to compile information regarding his WWII involvement for my son who was named after him. This is what I know so far: He was in Panama, Iceland, New Foundland, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Guadalcanal, and Bouginville. He was injured in Guam and sent to the hospital in Hawaii. He was also part of a group that defended Henderson Field in Guadalcanal that suffered many casualties. If there is anyone out there that knew my grandfather or can help with any information, please contact me. Also, thank you to all of those who fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Everyday I enjoy the freedom you fought to preserve. My generation so often takes our way of life for granted. But there are some of us who pause each time we see "Old Glory" and get chills thinking of what the red stripes symbolize. Your immeasurable courage is appreciated. God Bless you all!

I am making this entry for my father-in-law, originally from New york City, who served in the Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam campaigns in a Marine Tank unit. He received a purple heart for a shrapnel wound at Bougainville, I think. He was in the Marines from early 1942, until ankle injury on Guam in late 1944. Mustered out from hospital in 8/45. He would like to hear from men from his units, but his e-mail skills are shaky. You could write to him and cc me (Mike Yanega) at myanega@bowfinprintworks.com His daughter or I can relay your messages. Thanks.

Dear Fellow Marines, We need your help!

I represent a group of Marine Veterans, Veterans Families and Veterans Friends. We are trying to change the negative image of Vietnam Veterans that keeps resurfacing. Although we can not stop a image from surfacing, we want the American People to recognize a good image as well.

Most of the men in our group once served in Vietnam in the Marine Unit: The Combined Action Program.

We have a web site at www.CapVeterans.com that we would love you to visit and pass the word about.

Many people would think that improving the image of Vietnam Veterans is impossible, but we do not think us. However, we'll need some help along the way.

With the movie Pearl Harbor coming out in two weeks and the recent stories about another Vietnamese Massacre, we think our window of opportunity is perfect. Americans are in search of 'Real' positive heroes. (Survivors)

Please visit the web site and give us any support you can give. Thanks Jack Cunningham Vietnam Vet Cap Marine

Hero From Newberry

Not far from the center of Newberry, Michigan, down Dollarville Road, is the Forest Home Cemetery where an aging headstone marks the gravesite of one of America’s genuine heroes,Sergeant Clifford Dan (Crossett) Williams, U. S. Marine Corps.  Over 33 years ago Newberry residents gathered on that hallowed ground to honor the Marine that gave his life in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Williams had been a resident of Newberry prior to volunteering for the Marines.  When he died leading an attack against an enemy position on that far away battlefield in the spring of 1968 he left behind a mother, wife, son, daughter, 7 sisters and 4 brothers.  On July 14th of this year, the Marine Corps will pay honor and tribute to the legacy of Sergeant Williams by presenting to his family members the Silver Star Medal, the nation’s third highest military award for heroism.

Sergeant Williams and Navy Corpsman “Doc” Felle were digging their foxhole for the evening on March 27,1968 when the sound of enemy mortars could be heard leaving their launchers.  The first barrage of mortars would find targets wounding Sergeant Williams and 2dLt John M. Holladay, the platoon commander.  With Holladay in grave danger of dying from loss of blood, Williams and Felle attempted to control his bleeding while requesting a “medevac” helicopter.  While waiting for the helicopter another enemy mortar barrage commenced and “Doc” Felle and Sergeant Williams placed their bodies over their platoon commander to shield him from further injury.   Sergeant Williams then directed the helicopter to the battlefield location and 2dLt Holladay was medevaced to a hospital ship.  Only then would Sergeant Williams allow Corpsmen Felle to treat his wounds.  Sergeant Williams, being the next senior Marine, then assumed command of the platoon for the completion of the operation.

A month later while recovering in the Naval Hospital in Guam 2dLt Holladay was told the sad news that his Platoon Sergeant and Corpsman, the men who had saved his life, had been killed in action.  Although it was true that Sergeant Williams had died, the report regarding Corpsman Felle was in error.  During the battle 35 Marines and 2 Corpsmen were killed but battlefield reports are often subject to error due to the confusion of the moment.  During his stay in the hospital, 2dLt Holladay drafted award recommendations recognizing the heroism of Sergeant Williams and Corpsman Felle.

On the day that Sergeant Williams was killed Corpsman Felle was by his side early in the battle.  Felle had already given him 2 Purple Hearts for wounds and one more would assure him a trip out of Viet Nam. It was the policy to send any Marine home who had received 3 Purple Hearts. Williams had just returned from an R&R (rest and recuperation) in Hawaii with his wife Kristine.  During the battle Williams sent Corpsman Felle over to a gravely wounded Marine while he advanced toward the enemy with his M-16 on full automatic. This was the last time Felle would ever see his foxhole buddy and friend.  That day, April 30, 1968, Sergeant Williams was killed while attacking an enemy position.

Nearly 30 years would pass before the reunion of Felle and Williams’s son, Wayne Williams. They cried and talked about the dad that he never knew.  There were pictures they shared and memories that Felle had of Wayne’s dad.  It was their goal not to let the name of Sergeant Williams be forgotten.

2dLt Holladay would stay in the Marines advancing to Colonel, never forgetting the Marine and Corpsman that had saved his life on the battlefield in Vietnam.  Many years later Holladay found out that the award recommendations had been “lost” and that Williams and Felle had never been recognized for their heroism.   On March 27, 1999, 31 years to the day after Williams, Felle and Holladay lay on the battlefield, now retired Colonel Holladay received an email from his old platoon Corpsman “Doc” Felle.

Over the past 2 years the “lost” awards have been resubmitted and approved by the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Secretary Of the Navy. Once again, on July 14, 2001 the three members of 1st Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9thMarine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division will be reunited when the Silver Star Medal is presented at Sergeant Williams’s gravesite.  Marines always take care of their own.

Request any assistance in locating anyone who served with my father Charles "Chuck" Templin, Sr., in Vietnam during his three tours. He died a proud Marine in 1979 before I could know him as an adult. He never spoke of his tours and what he did in the Corps, I only know he was an 0311 and damn proud of his service. He served in the Corps from 1954 to 1974. Duty stations included Camp Lejuene (1963-1965), Nellis AFB (1966-1967), and Camp Pendleton (1969-1974). From 1962 to 1969 he served in Viet Nam three times. Please contact me if you have any other knowledge about my father.

To my fellow Third Division Brothers, in the not too distant future, look for a new book on Iwo Jima, titled "Iwo Jima - 36 Days of Hell!" This book details the battle for Iwo Jima from the perspective of three Marines who fought in the battle. One from the Fifth Divison, the Fourth Division, and the Third Division (Chuck Nolte, who is a Third Division Association member). The book gives these three Marine's day-by-day description of the battle, for the entire 36 days. There is also a CORRECT version of the "Final Battle", that took place on March 26, the last day of the battle, in the area of the 5th Pioneer Battalion's AO. More than twenty-five 5th Pioneers tell of the battle, that morning, and how Lt. Harry Martin's leadership and death, earned him the last Congressional Medal of Honor to be awarded on Iwo. (A little point of interest that most people do not know: Nearly a quarter, or 25%, of all Medals of Honor, awarded during World War II, were awarded to the Marines and Navy personnel, during the "36 Days of Hell!", on Iwo Jima. To all my Comarades, thank you for your service, your loyalty, your patriotism, and your love of Corps and Country. SEMPER FI! - J.R. (Bob) Mulkey

Going through this website as well as Gomer's and 3/9's, I have relived a lot of memories on this wintery afternoon in New England. As we travel the road of life, our fallen brothers are still so young in our memories. I was a radioman in 1st platoon Kilo. My squad leader convinced me to carry the PRC25 after a day of walking point. Carried it the rest of the way, including a time with 60 mike mikes. Those guys were nuts.

Never served in the Third MarDiv, but I know it is a great bunch of Marines. A lot of 3rd Mardiv. Marines got sent to us in the 1st Mardiv. when the 3rd left country in 1969. Boy, were they pissed. I got to be friendly with a few of them, and I don't blame them for being pissed. Couple of them had almost 8 months in-country, and they wouldn't let them go home with the division.

My Dad,s brother was Corpsman Norm "Doc" Sadowsky who served on IWO JIMA. They've both passed on but their heritage lives on and was the reason I served on Active Duty with the USAF.

I am looking for Sgt. James Eason who was from California, Sgt. Dixon or Dickson and others stationed with me during the last of Dec.1967 and the 1st of Jan. 1968. The two Seargents wrote me up for the Silver Star and somewhere along the way the papers must have gotten lost, so I never did receive the citation. Sure would like to contact any of the Marines from back then to see how they are doing. Semper Fi Ray Millard 2157 W. Tonto Lane Phoenix, AZ 85027 (623) 581-1396
