PROUD SON OF 3RD MARINE--'Corporal Leo P.(Davis) Dwulit'. Invaded Bougainville on November 1, 1943. Site is excellent...I am currently searching for all info, pictures that I can find on the Bougainville Invasion, and my father. My father(Leo), and his buddy (Lenny), used to draw a circle on the beach at Bougainville, and dance the jitterbug to (Milo Muslins') accordion, for the troops coming out of the jungle. If anyone has a picture of my Dad (LEO) on Bougainville, or especially dancing the jitterbug, please let me know.

Leo told me stories about the natives being afraid to go up in the hills at night..."I E Ku get you Leo" they would say to him. Leo passed away on February 25, 1998...even at the end,he spoke of his Marine Buddies and I E Ku.

The 3rd Marines are always in my prayers, David Leo (Davis) Dwulit ottoschtuka@hotmail.com

He was there for Bougainville and was still his platoon's corpman up to when operation "Olympic" was cancelled. He is a lifetime member of the assoc. and forever a marine. Any replies to him are more than welcome to be placed through me as I see him often.

The information listed above is regarding my grandfather who passed away before I was born. I am trying to compile information regarding his WWII involvement for my son who was named after him. This is what I know so far: He was in Panama, Iceland, New Foundland, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Guadalcanal, and Bouginville. He was injured in Guam and sent to the hospital in Hawaii. He was also part of a group that defended Henderson Field in Guadalcanal that suffered many casualties. If there is anyone out there that knew my grandfather or can help with any information, please contact me. Also, thank you to all of those who fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Everyday I enjoy the freedom you fought to preserve. My generation so often takes our way of life for granted. But there are some of us who pause each time we see "Old Glory" and get chills thinking of what the red stripes symbolize. Your immeasurable courage is appreciated. God Bless you all!

I am making this entry for my father-in-law, originally from New york City, who served in the Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam campaigns in a Marine Tank unit. He received a purple heart for a shrapnel wound at Bougainville, I think. He was in the Marines from early 1942, until ankle injury on Guam in late 1944. Mustered out from hospital in 8/45. He would like to hear from men from his units, but his e-mail skills are shaky. You could write to him and cc me (Mike Yanega) at myanega@bowfinprintworks.com His daughter or I can relay your messages. Thanks.

Dear Fellow Marines, We need your help!

I represent a group of Marine Veterans, Veterans Families and Veterans Friends. We are trying to change the negative image of Vietnam Veterans that keeps resurfacing. Although we can not stop a image from surfacing, we want the American People to recognize a good image as well.

Most of the men in our group once served in Vietnam in the Marine Unit: The Combined Action Program.

We have a web site at www.CapVeterans.com that we would love you to visit and pass the word about.

Many people would think that improving the image of Vietnam Veterans is impossible, but we do not think us. However, we'll need some help along the way.

With the movie Pearl Harbor coming out in two weeks and the recent stories about another Vietnamese Massacre, we think our window of opportunity is perfect. Americans are in search of 'Real' positive heroes. (Survivors)

Please visit the web site and give us any support you can give. Thanks Jack Cunningham Vietnam Vet Cap Marine

Hero From Newberry

Not far from the center of Newberry, Michigan, down Dollarville Road, is the Forest Home Cemetery where an aging headstone marks the gravesite of one of America’s genuine heroes,Sergeant Clifford Dan (Crossett) Williams, U. S. Marine Corps.  Over 33 years ago Newberry residents gathered on that hallowed ground to honor the Marine that gave his life in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Williams had been a resident of Newberry prior to volunteering for the Marines.  When he died leading an attack against an enemy position on that far away battlefield in the spring of 1968 he left behind a mother, wife, son, daughter, 7 sisters and 4 brothers.  On July 14th of this year, the Marine Corps will pay honor and tribute to the legacy of Sergeant Williams by presenting to his family members the Silver Star Medal, the nation’s third highest military award for heroism.

Sergeant Williams and Navy Corpsman “Doc” Felle were digging their foxhole for the evening on March 27,1968 when the sound of enemy mortars could be heard leaving their launchers.  The first barrage of mortars would find targets wounding Sergeant Williams and 2dLt John M. Holladay, the platoon commander.  With Holladay in grave danger of dying from loss of blood, Williams and Felle attempted to control his bleeding while requesting a “medevac” helicopter.  While waiting for the helicopter another enemy mortar barrage commenced and “Doc” Felle and Sergeant Williams placed their bodies over their platoon commander to shield him from further injury.   Sergeant Williams then directed the helicopter to the battlefield location and 2dLt Holladay was medevaced to a hospital ship.  Only then would Sergeant Williams allow Corpsmen Felle to treat his wounds.  Sergeant Williams, being the next senior Marine, then assumed command of the platoon for the completion of the operation.

A month later while recovering in the Naval Hospital in Guam 2dLt Holladay was told the sad news that his Platoon Sergeant and Corpsman, the men who had saved his life, had been killed in action.  Although it was true that Sergeant Williams had died, the report regarding Corpsman Felle was in error.  During the battle 35 Marines and 2 Corpsmen were killed but battlefield reports are often subject to error due to the confusion of the moment.  During his stay in the hospital, 2dLt Holladay drafted award recommendations recognizing the heroism of Sergeant Williams and Corpsman Felle.

On the day that Sergeant Williams was killed Corpsman Felle was by his side early in the battle.  Felle had already given him 2 Purple Hearts for wounds and one more would assure him a trip out of Viet Nam. It was the policy to send any Marine home who had received 3 Purple Hearts. Williams had just returned from an R&R (rest and recuperation) in Hawaii with his wife Kristine.  During the battle Williams sent Corpsman Felle over to a gravely wounded Marine while he advanced toward the enemy with his M-16 on full automatic. This was the last time Felle would ever see his foxhole buddy and friend.  That day, April 30, 1968, Sergeant Williams was killed while attacking an enemy position.

Nearly 30 years would pass before the reunion of Felle and Williams’s son, Wayne Williams. They cried and talked about the dad that he never knew.  There were pictures they shared and memories that Felle had of Wayne’s dad.  It was their goal not to let the name of Sergeant Williams be forgotten.

2dLt Holladay would stay in the Marines advancing to Colonel, never forgetting the Marine and Corpsman that had saved his life on the battlefield in Vietnam.  Many years later Holladay found out that the award recommendations had been “lost” and that Williams and Felle had never been recognized for their heroism.   On March 27, 1999, 31 years to the day after Williams, Felle and Holladay lay on the battlefield, now retired Colonel Holladay received an email from his old platoon Corpsman “Doc” Felle.

Over the past 2 years the “lost” awards have been resubmitted and approved by the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Secretary Of the Navy. Once again, on July 14, 2001 the three members of 1st Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9thMarine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division will be reunited when the Silver Star Medal is presented at Sergeant Williams’s gravesite.  Marines always take care of their own.

Request any assistance in locating anyone who served with my father Charles "Chuck" Templin, Sr., in Vietnam during his three tours. He died a proud Marine in 1979 before I could know him as an adult. He never spoke of his tours and what he did in the Corps, I only know he was an 0311 and damn proud of his service. He served in the Corps from 1954 to 1974. Duty stations included Camp Lejuene (1963-1965), Nellis AFB (1966-1967), and Camp Pendleton (1969-1974). From 1962 to 1969 he served in Viet Nam three times. Please contact me if you have any other knowledge about my father.

To my fellow Third Division Brothers, in the not too distant future, look for a new book on Iwo Jima, titled "Iwo Jima - 36 Days of Hell!" This book details the battle for Iwo Jima from the perspective of three Marines who fought in the battle. One from the Fifth Divison, the Fourth Division, and the Third Division (Chuck Nolte, who is a Third Division Association member). The book gives these three Marine's day-by-day description of the battle, for the entire 36 days. There is also a CORRECT version of the "Final Battle", that took place on March 26, the last day of the battle, in the area of the 5th Pioneer Battalion's AO. More than twenty-five 5th Pioneers tell of the battle, that morning, and how Lt. Harry Martin's leadership and death, earned him the last Congressional Medal of Honor to be awarded on Iwo. (A little point of interest that most people do not know: Nearly a quarter, or 25%, of all Medals of Honor, awarded during World War II, were awarded to the Marines and Navy personnel, during the "36 Days of Hell!", on Iwo Jima. To all my Comarades, thank you for your service, your loyalty, your patriotism, and your love of Corps and Country. SEMPER FI! - J.R. (Bob) Mulkey

Going through this website as well as Gomer's and 3/9's, I have relived a lot of memories on this wintery afternoon in New England. As we travel the road of life, our fallen brothers are still so young in our memories. I was a radioman in 1st platoon Kilo. My squad leader convinced me to carry the PRC25 after a day of walking point. Carried it the rest of the way, including a time with 60 mike mikes. Those guys were nuts.

Never served in the Third MarDiv, but I know it is a great bunch of Marines. A lot of 3rd Mardiv. Marines got sent to us in the 1st Mardiv. when the 3rd left country in 1969. Boy, were they pissed. I got to be friendly with a few of them, and I don't blame them for being pissed. Couple of them had almost 8 months in-country, and they wouldn't let them go home with the division.

I am looking for Sgt. James Eason who was from California, Sgt. Dixon or Dickson and others stationed with me during the last of Dec.1967 and the 1st of Jan. 1968. The two Seargents wrote me up for the Silver Star and somewhere along the way the papers must have gotten lost, so I never did receive the citation. Sure would like to contact any of the Marines from back then to see how they are doing. Semper Fi Ray Millard 2157 W. Tonto Lane Phoenix, AZ 85027 (623) 581-1396

Mr. Maury Williams visited Guam, the old battlesites, in 1997 and took a good many photos, which I have posted for him on my sons site, as well as a Poem he wrote in remembrance of the good men lost in that battle. He has pics of Asan beach, crashed Marine Corsair, and several others. There is also a link to an AP article about him returning items taken from a Japanese soldier he had killed. he is working on putting together more of that return trip, letters from comrades, and memorys of the battles. I would hope that some in the Division would check it out for him, and continue to offer support and feedback. He tells me he is a lifetime member of 3rd Div. Assoc. And he uis a Semper Fi Heart. Same Division and Regiment as my dad, tho they did not know one another. I will try to post the URL here as a link, but failing that, it is johnmancuso.homestead.com then look for the link to Mr. Williams pages. Direct link http://johnmancuso.Homestead.com/MWILLIAMS2.html His email address is posted on his pages.

My father PFC John Thomas Pribble just passed away. He served in WWII in the 3rd Division and was very proud of this fact alone. I was always asking him about what he did in the War and he would only respond as saying all he did was peel potatoes. I have found two letters he wrote to family members dated Decemeber 1943 and March 1944 the return address stated Fleet Marine Forces, unit 550 and the 5th Barrage Balloon Squadron. Does anyone have any information or links to anyone that can help me get to know my father.

In Memory of my brother David. You did what the weaker would never dare to do. You walked where those so critical would never be brave enough to walk. You saw things that those of lesser character could never bear to see. You felt the putridness of fear in the bowels of your soul and yet walked on a mission you did not choose. May you soul find peace in death, among the highest of angels of heaven, that did not exist in your last tortured moments upon the earth. Remember always I love you, my dearest brother. May God bless you and keep you in his arms. Love, your little sister, Terri

I'm not sure exactly where to start with this. My ex-husband was in 3rd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Corps ... boot camp in Pendelton, and then Viet Nam '66-67, on Cal-Co Island. Believe he said 5 miles east of Hue. He mentioned the rubber tank of fuel. He has mentioned to me that there's been a few times he's thought of trying to connect with some he served with. When he came back to the States he was stationed in Cherry Point NC. His name is Norman Rapp... he was drafted from Dayton Ohio... he was one of the 3 shortest and runtiest guys drafted into the Marines that day he said. Would certainly appreciate it if anyone could lead me in the right direction. Thanks to all you guys!

Unfortunately, there aren't too many WWII veterans around now. My grandpa, PFC Ed Popek, was one of them, and I wanted to share some of his experience. Ed Popek joined "I" Co., 3 Bn., 3rd Marines, 3rd Div. on January 1, 1943 on American Samoa. He participated in a few amphibious landing exercises in the Somoan and Soloman Islands (landed on Guadalcanal on August 1, 1943)before doing the real thing on Bougainville on Nov. 1, 1943. He fought as a rifleman and scout on Bougainville, and he said the fighting there was fierce. He contracted malaria in the jungle on Bougainville in January 1944, and was shipped back to the U.S. in February 1944. He spent the rest of the war stateside recovering from malaria. He got in a little trouble for going AWOL after the war ended, but after a 6 month confinement, he served with "F" Co., 2nd Bn., 7th Marine Regt. in China from June to August 1946 (U.S. Occupation Forces), after which he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. My grandpa wasn't a hero or anything, just a regular marine infantryman who did his duty. He died in 1984. I would like to hear from anyone who served on Bougainville in WWII. I would also like to thank those who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. My generation owes you a lot.

I'm searching for anyone who went through the Bougainville or the Guam campaigns, in 1943 and 1944 respectively. Our regiment was reorganized into the 3rd Provisional Marine Brigade for Guam and later into the 6th Marine Division for Okinawa. I joined Fox Battery as a replacement on 11/11/43 on Bougainville. I left my buddies in Feb. 1944 at our base on Guadalcanal because of Jungle Rot. I have had no contact since then and would like to reconnect with anyone who was in Fox Battery, 12th Regt. 3rd Division back in 1943, 45 & 46. We were a 75MM "Pack Howitzer" artillery group. Please let me know if anyone is still left. Semper Fi! Tom McKearn

Was with 3rd AT Btn, H&S Co, Da Nang, June 65-Aug 66. Actually in Motor T but was assigned to the Reactionary Force, a squad that made daily search patrol and nightly ambush. Spent almost the entire year in the bush on that. Anyone around Marble Mountain during this time. Our squad (or several) went out to assist other Marines there who were getting chopped up badly. Soon as we arrived we came under machine gun fire...lasted the night. One of my squad was killed, and our Lt. injured.

Semper Fi to all! warren.

This is to remember my father who just recently passed away of complications due to lung cancer. LtCol. Laurier (Larry) Tremblay. He served with 3 btn 9th motors in Viet Nam. He was member of the 3rd Mar Div association. and a great guy and a great father. I will miss him dearly, He joined the Corp in 1946 to get the G.I. bill for college and 25 years later he retired as a LtCol. He taught me more about myself, respect and pride than my four years in the Corp. Any one who may have known him, I would like to hear from you. Semper Fi, Steve

On November 22 at 8PM the Discovery Channel will feature the Documentary of field medicine called "Real Mash" which will include the reunion of Colonel John M Holladay (Ret.),1st Platoon Commander-Kilo 3/9/3 1968 and Raymond A. Felle, Corpsman- 1st platoon, Kilo 3/9/3- 1968 at San Diego's MCRD in April of this year. The last time they saw each other was on the battle field Southwest of Cam Lo on March 27, 1968. Col Holladay was gravely wounded with partially severed carotid, broken arm and pelvis, stomach, thigh and facial wounds. With the loss of blood and with continued incoming I was not sure he would live for the rest of the hour. A brave H-34 crew came in while we continued to take incoming and medivaced him along with other wounded. That was the last time I ever saw him or knew his fate till locating him on the Internet in March, 1999. My foxhole buddy, Sgt. Clifford (Will) Williams, left the safety of our foxhole to assist me in treating Lt. Holladay and getting him on the H-34 even while he was wounded himself and we continued to receive murderous incoming. He could have request a medivac for himself but did not only allowing me to treat him after medivacing Lt. Holladay. He then took charge of our platoon until being pulled out of the field. Sadly, this Marine's Marine was killed not far from Cam Lo on April 30, 1968 leaving behind a pregnant wife and a son while we were assisting B 1/9 who was ambushed. We had 31 Marines and Corpsmen KIA day. Lt. Holladay, while recovering in Guam was told that I was KIA with Sgt. Williams by our wounded radioman.

Greetings! My father was 3rd div. USMC. Headquarters Co., Headquarters Btl. WWII -South Pacific Theatre. Battles consist of IWO JIMA, BOUGAINVILLE, and GUAM. I lost my dad this past March. He was very proud of the fact that he was in the Marines and so were we. He was Chaplain of the MCL/Shawnee Det. in Southern Il. until he passed. I am serving my 2nd term as suly elected Sec. of MCLA/Shawnee Unit. I am trying to journal on my father's tour of duty. He never talked much about the war with his family because he had all girls and did not feel that it was of good taste. Later in years he started talking of IWO JIMA and didn't want to talk about the other two. I am doing this journal, not only for a tribute to my father; but to all those Marines that fought in these battles. Also, this will help bring closure to me and my family. Any help or info. that can be sent to me by e-mail would be ever appreciated. To all who read or view this, thank you and SEMPER FI !!!

It's great to be a member of the 3d Marine Division, and the 3d Div Assosiation! I have met some of the best Marines ever, that are great leaders of our Corps, and I am proud to have served along side them: Brigadier General Gordon C. Nash and Sgt Major Ralph A. I'm hoping someone can help me gather information on my father-in-law, a Marine with the 3rd Marines in WWII. He served in several Pacific battles, including Iwo Jima I'm told, even receiving a commendation or two. He is 77 years old, in failing health and I and my wife would like to learn more about a part of his life about which he speaks little. His name is Stephen Antosiewicz and he lives in Brooklyn. I thought he was outside the stereotyped Marine mold but, having just finished "Flags of Our Fathers", I've come to realize he is probably just like every other Marine who has survived combat: kind to a fault, willing to spend his last nickel to help even total strangers in need, gentle beyond belief and absolutely principled. I have no other information on him than this. Anyone know him? If so, would you be so kind as to share your memories/ I, and his daughter, my wife, would appreciate that.
