I am placing this for my father. Art Johnson now living in Effingham, Illinois served during WWII in the Battle for Iwo Jima. He was wounded there and came home. His time in the service was short. I am looking for information on his time on the island. The Civil War has the official records. Does the milkitary have any reports that are available to the public were I can find detailed information on my fathers service. Dad has little memory of his time there I feel the need to know before he passes on. To me he is a great American hero and I want to know more. I saw a book on the History of the 3rd Division on Iwo Jima and would like to find a copy. Please contact in any way. Kip Johnson 913 N. I'm trying to find someone who served with me at Tan Son Nyut Air Base in Viet Nam during the years of 1970-1971. I was in the 377 Transport Squadron and traveled off base frequently. Please send me a shout if you know of someone or are someone that served there at the time. I was diagnosed with PTSD and Agent Orange after I got out. I think I contracted it on the base but our government denies it. Thanks Gary Evan

I'm looking for information on my best friend Michael McGinnis, US Marine, who dies in Viet Nam in Sept. 1969 in Quang Tri do to hostile action. I'm not sure what Marine unit he served with and this is why I'm trying here. After finding which until he served with I will try to get in contact with friends of his in his company. I served in Viet Nam a year later and had no idea he had dies until I got out of the service. Hoping I can get some info on him. Thanks.

I am a MSgt In the USAF stationed at Hickam AFB, HI, my uncle, mother's brother, was PFC Robert A. Crider, he was KIA on Guam 26 Jul 1944 at the age of 18. We recently started doing research on his unit and found his grave at Punchbowl National Cementary in Honolulu. Through the information there we found out he was assigned to the 3rd Marine Divsion, 21 MAR. I continue to do research on the battle on Guam.

I am presently making a documentary film about the life and death of my father, 2nd Lieut. John "Jack" Hulme, who was killed in action in Vietnam two weeks after I was born. He was a member of "H&S Co, 2 Bn, 3rd Mar, 3rd Marine Div," and served in Vietnam between 3/69 and 6/69. I have begun interviewing my father's family and friends, those who loved him and knew him best, in hopes of finally getting to know him myself after all these years...if you knew or served with him, I would love to hear any story you had to tell. Anyone interested can contact me at the above e-mail address, or at my home phone number in New Jersey, 732-745-8845. Thank you very much, and take care.

I'm signing this for my father Virgil H. Niederhuth of Springfield, Missouri (at that time). 1944-45 3rd Div. replacement batallion (he can't remember which batt.), Guam and Iwo Jima (Purple Heart). I believe he landed on Iwo Jima on the 2nd or 3rd day. After Iwo and the hospital ship recovery he says he was attached to the 9th Reg.,1st Bat., Able company, and trained for asault on the main islands that, thank God, never happened. On this special day and every day, a really big thanks to all of you who served....

I am looking for information on an old friend of mine from high school who was MIA in Vietnam in 1965 or 1966. He was a Marine.

The last letter I had from him was from Vietnam, a place called Fy Xuan, which he called "an island, northwest of the airfield called Ky Xuan." He even spelled it phonetically for me! Key Shwinn. His name is James Thomas Egan, Jr., although he was Jim Egan to me and close friends. On the envelop, his return address has:

H/3/12 3rd Mar. Div.

In his letter he said "I've been in a direct support 105 mm (4") [I was in the Navy so Jim interpreted the mm gauges for me!] howitzer battery and assigned as the Forward Observer (Fo) for Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. Our battalion defended the north end of the airfield [Danang?] and patrolled out out he northwest in a sector about 5 miles from the airfield."

Jim was a 2nd Lieutenant, graduated from Notre Dame, 1964 where to took the Marine option in NROTC. I was Navy NROTC, Duke, 1964.

I don't know how he died, the circumstances, anything. If anyone knows, I would sure appreciate it. Larry Clayton

Dear Heroes, To many, Memorial Day has become another shopping or vacation or drinking holiday. Many hear the uttering of war on TV, on the radio etc. and watch pictures of flags on graves, and old war heroes in uncomfortable fitting uniforms. But, unfortunately, that's all many will see!!!!!! They will not see the fear young men experienced in the war zone. They will not see the fear of their parents and siblings left behind. They will not see the pain of the men that trained them to go there. They will not see the pain of the leaders that lost them. They will not feel the bullets that ripped through the soldier, or the knives that scared them deep. They will not see they eyes of a child being used to lure the soldier and to kill them both. They will not feel the sorrow of the soldier watching his buddies die in his arms or get blown to pieces. They will not feel the guilt of the soldier that survived, wishing he could have done more, offered one more limb, one more drop of his blood for his buddies that died. They will not feel, how unwelcome the returning soldier was returning stateside. They will not see and feel the nightmares day after day, week after week; year after year many returning heroes endured and still are enduring. They will never see, how their hearts are crying out in pain and searching for the answer. I could list many more.... but it's time for me to say: THANK YOU! I WELCOME YOU HOME! THANK YOU! NO MATTER IF YOU RETURNED ALIVE OR DEAD! THANK YOU! TO THE MIA'S, MAY THEY FIND THEIR PEACE AND RETURN HOME. THANK YOU FOR THE TEARS YOU HAD TO SHED IN PRIVATE! THANK YOU FOR THE PAIN YOU SUFFERED! THANK YOU FOR YOUR LIMBS YOU LOST! THANK YOU FOR BEING MY HEROES!!!! SEMPER FI Q WWW.DELTA1-5.COM WWW.VIETNAMHEROES.COM

In today's Schenectady (NY) Daily Gazette (5/17/2000) an article was published concerning the reinterment of Pvt. Harry E. Gray, Jr., USMC killed in action on Iwo Jima in early 1945. His remains were brought back and buried in the Mont Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, Massachusetts in 1948. His sister, Nancy Shade has tried over the past few years to have his remains moved to the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schylerville, New York. On Thursday 17 May 2000, Pvt. Harry E. Gray, Jr., USMC will be reinterred with full military honors. For today only, the article can be found at the following web page:

My father is Eddie R. Simmons--was with Co I 3/3 in Vietnam in 1969 (up until "Vietnamization"). I plan to recommend this site to him immediately. It's good to see you guys form this kind of network of support and brotherhood this way. Just like to say that this non-vet civilian holds you guys in the highest esteem for the sacrifices you made for this country.
